  business card RUNES

by Jerry

of  The Angels' Loft

When you came to the Angels' Loft, you may have noticed a menu board which reads in part "Rune Readings with Jerry". The average response to this is "What are the Runes?" You might have wondered about this yourself.

Well, to put it in the simplest words, Runes are an ancient form of writing that comes from Indo-Europe in general and Northern Europe in particular with emphasis on the Germanic tribes dating from around 200 B.C. to 200 A.D. (Because Runes were usually carved on wood and then burned, there is little physical evidence of their use on a large scale before this. But based on cave drawing's, it is believed that they go back to Prehistoric Times.)

The ancient tribesmen of Europe used runes for many things including healing, devining, and magic. As time went by and the nomadic tribesmen settled on what became their "home lands", the Runes eventually took on an alphabetic use. These alphabets or FUTHARK as they were called ranged from 16 letters to as many as 34 letters depending on the needs of each group of people.

Runes are still in use this way in Iceland, but usually for ceremonial use only.

As the Romans invaded Northern Europe and took over its Germanic peoples, the Runes were gradually replaced with Latin letters. They were almost completely destroyed after being declared evil by the then ever growing Christian Church. They were seen as "From the Devil" because of their close association with "The Old Ways" of the local klans.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, there came a major push by many inside the old German empire to bring back the Runes as the official alphabet of the German speaking nations since this was the first alphabet of the ancient Germanic language.

Today, as people in America look to their roots to find out more about who we are and where we came from, many of us start with our Tribal beginnings. If we are red, we look to Native American past; if we are black, we look to our Native African past and if we are white we can look to our Native Indo-European past. The Runes are a very good place to start learning about native European roots.

There are many books on the subject of the RUNE and most are very good. One of the simplest and least expensive is called "Practical Guide to the Runes." It gives a clear and concise explanation of the RUNES. This includes details on how to make your own set and it tells how they relate to each other. This book even shows you how to use the Runes in simple magic. We usually have plenty of copies at the Angels' Loft and the price is under $5.00. See the chart below for a sample of Runes.

My name is Jerry and I have studied the Runes for about six years and am available for Rune readings by appointment at The Angels' Loft.

In my Rune readings, I use seven sets of Runes and do ten separate readings from these. It all takes about one-half hour and can be informative and fun.

We look forward to seeing you for your Rune reading very soon.
